Chemicals applied on Fruits

Big Pharma needs sick people to prosper

"Big Pharma needs sick people to prosper. Patients, not healthy people, are their customers. If everybody was cured of a particular illness or disease, pharmaceutical companies would lose 100% of their profits on the products they sell for that ailment. What all this means is because modern medicine is so heavily intertwined with the financial profits culture, it’s a sickness industry more than it is a health industry."

Confusing Rubric Coquettish - not enough in the homeopathic repertories

Q: One rubric that has always had me confused is "Coquettish - not enough" - does that mean if I don't make eyes at my homeopath, it's a sign of pathology?

A: The English dictionary meaning of COQUETTISH is "trying to gain the attention of men without serious feelings", which, right or wrongly, defines it as a women-only symptom.
To understand the intended meaning of rubrics in the Repertory, it is a good practice to read its subrubrics. In this case, they are "not enough" and "too much". Whereas we may understand that someone can be "too coquettish", it is much harder to understand how a woman can be "not coquettish enough": do women need to be "not serious"?

So we need a small investigation, across languages this time. Although several authors contributed to this rubric, the origin of this rubric is found in Jean-Pierre Gallavardin's work (Répertoire de médecine psychique). If we check the French dictionaries we see that "coquette" is defined as "desiring to please" or even just "gracious and elegant". It is stipulated that a coquettish person tries to please the person of the opposite sex, so not a women-only symptom.

Consequently, the symptom definition of coquettish should be "desiring to please the opposite sex by grace and elegance". That can be achieved by one or more of these tool kits:
  1. - make up (women: lipstick, eye shadow, eyelashes; both sexes: perfume)
  2. - clothing (both sexes: décolleté, flashy colors; women: high heels)
  3. - gestures (both sexes: ways to look, to move the hands, the hips)
For sure, some readers will not agree with some examples. That is normal, because, as for any symptom, we must consider the "context" of the symptom. Possible contexts are: age, race, country, religion, sex, etc.

Young girls going to a party will be called (not enough) coquettish following different criteria than women adhering a religion which forbids any coquetry.

To know whether it is a symptom making up your eyes to see a homeopath, you need to consider what most women in the same context would do.

At last, be aware that George Vithoulkas added sulphur to this rubric. That confirms the above- mentioned way to use this rubric: sulphur has "Mind - Indifference - appearance; to his personal", "Mind - Elegance - want of elegance" and "Mind - Tastelessness in dressing". All these are cross-references to our symptom under investigation.

Less is More! Are you giving too many homeopathic remedies to your kids?

by Amy Rothenberg, ND, DHANP

I RECENTLY WAS BLESSED TO BECOME an aunt, with my younger sister having her first child. This beautiful addition to our family is a wonderful and welcome event. And it allows me, as the doctor in the family, to play a special role. I get to hear and respond to worries and concerns at all hours of the day and night! I hear questions about the baby like, "What should we do about incessant crying? Sleep difficulties? Bothersome rashes? A runny nose?"

I also get questions from the new mother about shifts in her own digestion, problems with breastfeeding, and issues such as moodiness and irrational worry. While they have me on the line, the grandmother or uncle from the "other side" might throw in a question or two about their own health concerns! I am generally quite gracious in these situations and offer advice, referrals, and support.

The ideal baby gift?
When a baby is born to a family member, I debate long and hard about whether to give that family a homeopathic first-aid kit. With new parents in my practice, I go through a similar process deciding whether to recommend that they obtain a kit. At first glance, it seems that every family should have a homeopathic first-aid kit, as it will make giving a remedy at home that much easier. If I am prescribing by telephone for an acute situation, the family will have the remedies right at hand.

But that quick and easy access to homeopathic remedies might not always be the best thing. There is something tempting about "fixing" all the little problems or trying to "nip things in the bud." With new mothers and fathers who have not had the experience of weathering the ups and downs of the first few years of life, I have found that education and encouragement are often times more indicated than homeopathic remedies. This internal debate has led me to the following thoughts about when it's a good idea for parents to prescribe homeopathic remedies for their children in acute health situations-and when it's best to keep the lid on the remedy kit closed.

When not to use homeopathy at home
1. When a situation is severe or life threatening, the best place for the child is with those who are expert at treating emergencies-that is, in the hospital. We cannot be wed to our philosophical beliefs about health care when a child's life is in danger. We can always go back to natural medicine once the child is safe. It is fine, however, to use a homeopathic remedy on the way to the emergency room or while under allopathic care.

2. While your child is under homeopathic constitutional care, any prescribing for acute conditions should be done in consultation with your homeopath. Often times the acute situation can offer the practitioner insight and information about ongoing treatment needed by that child. If parents are quick to give remedies for each set of symptoms, this can deny the practitioner potentially useful information about the way the child either reacted to the remedy or manifests acute illness-both important bits of data for case analysis and long-term follow-up care. This is especially true for the child who is being treated constitutionally for mental or emotional conditions like anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, autistic spectrum disorders, seizure disorders, or any other chronic illness. Successful constitutional treatment for these children may mean that symptoms shift within or toward the physical plane, while more serious elements of the child's mental emotional symptomatology improve. In such cases, the homeopath may counsel the family that the new physical symptoms are not a true acute problem suitable for home treatment, and that enduring them or using non-homeopathic palliative care may offer the best opportunity for overall healing.

3. If you find you are giving acute remedies-the same one or different ones-frequently (e.g., every week or several times per month), it would mean to me that this child had certain patterns of illness and susceptibility that would benefit from constitutional care by a homeopathic professional.

4. If the problem is not long-lasting or severe and will pass on its own, I would not give a homeopathic remedy. Of course, it is difficult to know during the early stages whether an illness is going to be long-lasting. It will not hurt the child to have a cold, a minor cough, a passing skin rash, or to be cranky for a few days. I want all of our children to develop healthy immune systems, something that occasional, not-too-serious viral illnesses help them to do. I also want parents of children in my care to learn how to meet the emotional and physical needs of their children by trying many approaches, not only by giving homeopathic remedies.

5. Lastly, I would not recommend giving homeopathic remedies to siblings of sick children "just so they can have some, too." There are homeopaths who do prescribe prophylactically during an epidemic of say, whooping cough, but that is a matter for another article. Remedies have an effect. The point here is that homeopathic remedies do act; they do have an impact on people. Most of us would not offer our children (or prescribe for our patients) pharmaceutical products to be taken frequently, based on any fleeting symptom. Homeopathic remedies need to be treated with the same sort of respect.

When to treat at home
It's a good idea to prescribe for your children's acute health problems when the following is true:

1. You've tried other natural, gentle approaches and they have not worked.

2. You know that, for the child in question, a particular set of prodromal (early) symptoms always leads to the same problem and you want to catch it early.

3. You are working with a qualified homeopathic practitioner and they recommend it.

4. Your child is not being treated constitutionally and the acute problems are infrequent. Keep in mind that, even when all of the above is true, it is good to offer a remedy only when the symptoms are clear and you can prescribe with at least a degree of confidence.

A balance in prescribing
After reading this, I imagine that many of you will feel guilty, thinking you may have over-prescribed for those you love. Not to worry: it will rarely lead to any severe problems, emotional issues, or toxic, overdose symptoms. The worst that happens is that the overall case becomes muddied or difficult for the homeopath to analyze.

What we are looking for in our recommendations to family and friends is a balanced posture toward the prescribing of homeopathic remedies. Use them carefully when they are indicated and use them well. But you may want to consider putting that homeopathic first-aid kit a little higher on the bathroom shelf, so that you will be less tempted to grab a remedy at the first sign of any sickness.

As to my sister, I will probably wind up giving her that first-aid kit after all, to have on hand and dust off once in a while, when a remedy is really, truly indicated.

Choosing Homeopathy for Children

(by Dr. Rothenberg)

There are so many choice to make as parents these days. Natural childbirth or not? To nurse or bottle feed? Cloth diapers or disposable? Family bed or crib?

How many years between children? What type of preschool or schooling? The choices and options for many families in our times are endless. So, too, for the kind of medical care to use. How much is safe to treat at home? When is it imperative to get the opinion of a trained medical professional? What if my partner and I don't agree?

In my last 25 years of practice, I have had the pleasure of working with many families, offering natural medicine choices for health care issues. Some patients come to me already certain they want to go the natural way. Others come in not really knowing the type of work I do as a naturopathic physician specializing in homeopathy. But they know someone who was helped with a similar problem, so they want the same "cure." Still others arrive quite skeptical, having been disappointed by previous therapies and attempts to help their child.

With homeopathy we can offer a non-toxic, effective, and inexpensive approach to first-aid, acute, and chronic health issues that arise in the course of raising a family.

First-aid and acute problems For first-aid and acute conditions, in the vast majority of situations, there are a limited number of homeopathic remedies that would be considered. Remedies that are used over and over again include: Aconite, Belladonna, Pulsatilla, Chamomilla, Sulphur, Arnica, Mercurius, and Arsenicum album. I truly do not know where I would be as a physician and as a mother without these dear friends in the medicine cabinet.

Thankfully, there are wonderful books on acute prescribing (available through the NCH), written in away that enables a parent to choose the correct remedy for things like bee stings, sore throats, teething, and diarrhea. Most of these books will also caution parents as to when it is essential to seek further medical care. No one wants to put a child at risk because of a philosophical belief in natural treatment. There is a time and a place for all types of medicine.

Chronic illness For children with chronic illness, constitutional homeopathy offers one type of approach that addresses the underlying causes of the illness and hopefully presents solutions to difficult physical, emotional, behavioral, and psychological problems. In constitutional treatment (for both children and adults), we give a homeopathic remedy for the whole person - their physical, mental, and emotional state.

I spend a fair amount of time trying to help people understand what it is I do and how the homeopath works. I take as much time as is necessary for the parent to learn that all aspects of the child will be important to me. I need to understand not just the particular diagnosis, but also how they experience their problem in all the minute details. I need to understand little things, like what and how they eat and how they sleep; things related to temperament and personality, like how they behave with new children or if they're more of a leader or a follower. I explain how I will be interested in the mother's pregnancy and in the child's earliest months, their development as well as their experience of school and their social lives.

We try to put the child's illnesses into the context of the rest of their lives and understand them in a complete way. Naturally, I will be observing the relationship between parent and child, how clingy they are, how they respond to limit -setting, how they communicate with each other-all of these are important to prescribing the correct remedy to help the child with whatever complaint caused the parent to make the appointment.

For this sort of constitutional care, it is good to have an objective person prescribe (i.e., not the parent!) and to follow the child over time. During constitutional care, some homeopaths will ask you not to treat your child at home for first-aid or acute conditions so as not to interfere with their treatment-other homeopaths may feel fine about home care.

So whether your child is prone to first-aid or acute illnesses or has a more chronic disease, having homeopathy more available than ever before, gives many families the choice of using this safe and effective approach.

Frequency Asked Questions about Homeopathy and Homeopathic Treatment

1. What are the physical, mental and emotional aspects of homeopathy?

Homeopathy is based on the philosophy that the body, mind and emotions are not really separate and distinct, but are actually fully integrated. Based on this perspective, a homeopath seeks a remedy that fits all of a patient’s physical and psychological symptoms. Although some people’s symptoms may be complex, a well-trained homeopath will know which symptoms should be specially noted, and can choose an effective, individualized remedy.
Prolonged emotional stress can cause physical problems, like upset stomach, difficulty in digesting foods, poor nutrient assimilation, weaker immune system, sleeplessness, etc. The opposite is also true. Illness and physical problems can result in anxiety or emotional uneasiness. Therefore, it is important for a homeopath to conduct an in-depth interview of a patient to ensure a proper, all encompassing remedy.

2. What are the three levels of homeopathic therapy?

Level 1: First Aid
Homeopathy can be used in first aid to safely treat common ailments and occurrences, such as sprains and bruises, minor burns, skin irritations and reactions (including poison ivy, diaper rash and insect bites), teething pain, etc.

Level 2: Acute Homeopathy
Acute health problems are those in which the symptoms will eventually go away on their own. They are temporary conditions, such as colds, flu, coughs, sprains, etc. A homeopathic remedy can be useful and attractive because it is safe, gentle and has no harmful side effects. Homeopathy can also be used to assist sensitive conditions such as pregnancy.

Level 3: Constitutional Homeopathy
Constitutional homeopathy refers to the treatment of a person as a whole, including past and present symptoms. When accurately implemented, homeopathic constitutional care can elicit a profound healing response. Homeopathy can be extremely effective in treating chronic and long-term health problems. Recurrent ear infections, for example, can be treated with a homeopathic remedy for a longer period of time to strengthen the body’s immune system and to prevent future occurrences.

3. What is the relationship between symptoms and homeopathy?

Symptoms are the language of a disease — the body’s attempt to balance itself. Without symptoms, a person could have a potentially life threatening illness with no way of identifying it. There have been many cancer patients who reported that they hadn’t suffered from a cold or flu in years prior to their diagnosis. The explanation was probably not that they didn’t have infections during this period, but more likely that their bodies were unable to fight these infections by producing necessary symptom indications.
Many conventional drugs try to inhibit and suppress symptoms — sometimes leading to even more serious symptoms. Conventional (allopathic) physicians do not usually recognize the new series of symptoms as being related to the old. Thus, they treat them as new and unrelated problems.
Did you know that a fever is the body’s attempt to activate the immune system’s white blood cells and defend itself from infection? If a person is given a symptom-supressing medication — fighting the fever — too soon, they will be less able to fight the actual infection.
Homeopathy does not seek to remove or suppress symptoms. Its goal is to recognize and remove the underlying cause of these symptoms. This is why a homeopath will work toward understanding the whole person — including their body, mind and emotional state — before prescribing a remedy.

4. Can such small doses be effective?

Homeopathic remedies are indeed very small doses. However, they are specially prepared doses which undergo a specific process — including dilution of ingredients (called potentization), as well as a vigorous shaking (succussion).
Specially formulated homeopathic remedies are thought to resonate with the body, triggering a positive healing response. This response gently, and effectively, heals from the inside out.
The documented results from thousands of experienced homeopaths, and from millions of their patients, clearly show that these small, individualized doses produce profound health benefits.

5. How can the correct homeopathic remedy be found?

Finding the appropriate homeopathic remedy depends upon gaining a complete understanding of the patient as a whole person. This means that the homeopath must take note of the physical, mental and emotional levels of each person before deciding on a correct remedy.
Homeopathic remedies have been described as "designer medicines." While this might seem like a simplistic and trendy view of homeopathy, it is true that remedies are specially "designed" for individuals based upon their unique, and sometimes complex, state of being.
Take for example migraine headaches. We could easily demonstrate that one person might have pain on one side of their head, while another person had pain on both sides. Still another person could have nausea accompanying the migraine, and yet another could have dizziness. It is important to recognize that, in addition to the person’s physical symptoms, there are underlying psychological and emotional aspects as well.
Homeopathic remedies are only given when the total continuum of physical and psychological symptoms has been identified.

6. What is the difference between homeopathy and conventional medicine?

Homeopathy’s Approach
Homeopathy is based on a"whole person" approach. In homeopathy, the remedy or treatment program is customized and individualized to the patient, with the intent of removing the underlying cause.

Conventional Medicine’s Approach
Conventional (allopathic) medicine usually relies on treating a patient’s physical symptoms. This treatment might also assume a person’s symptoms need to be controlled, suppressed or eliminated.

The difference may be stated in a simple analogy: eradicating the "symptom" of a car’s low oil level (the warning light) does not change, or remedy, the cause of the signal (low-oil).

Goals of the Homeopathic Approach

The Homeopath’s Role as "Detective"
It has been said that the work of the homeopath is to observe the patient, process and reflect on the gathered information, and then determine the underlying disturbance. This process can be thought of as a mystery, wherein the homeopathic "detective" attempts to discover where the flow of energy in the body has been blocked or impeded. Each signal/symptom offered by the patient can be thought of as a clue to determine the correct remedy. The patient’s eye contact, body posture, breathing patterns, voice quality, and expressions are also noted as potential clues. Next, the data must be reconstructed, as it might be in a mystery novel or movie.

When all of the information about the patient’s physical, mental and emotional symptoms has been documented, then the final search for the answer begins. Unlike a detective — or medical physician for that matter — the homeopath’s goal is not only to remove the symptoms, but also to eliminate the essential causal problem by stimulating the body’s natural curative powers. This is the reason for obtaining such a detailed analysis of the patient.
The Homeopathic Treatment
The goal of the homeopathic treatment is to encourage the body to return to a natural state of balance and health. Like the missing pieces of a puzzle, homeopathic medicines help "fill-in" the gaps in the body to stimulate a person’s own healing potential and energies. When this occurs, the person will have access to the body’s natural strength and wisdom, so that more conventional medicines and chemical-based substances may not be needed.

7. Is homeopathy merely psychological?

If you think you must "believe in" homeopathy for it to work, you need to know that it is not a placebo effect. Here are some powerful examples:
Infants: Homeopathic remedies and treatments are successfully used by parents for common infant ailments such as colic, teething pain and some infections.
Animals: There are many veterinarians using homeopathic medicines to treat domestic pets such as cats, dogs and birds, as well as barnyard animals like goats, horses and cows. Is it possible to have a placebo effect with animals?
Millions of people across the world use and rely on homeopathic remedies. Today there are a rapidly growing number of conventional medical doctors using homeopathic medicines, including:
  • 39% of French family physicians
  • 20% of German physicians
  • 10% of Italian physicians
Moreover, in many European countries there is a growing trend of medical doctors referring patients to homeopathic physicians.

8. What is the patient's role?

Open Communication & Observation
While it is the homeopath's job to elicit relevant information by asking probing questions, the patient can expect a higher chance of receiving an effective homeopathic remedy if he or she is open and truthful in describing their physical and psychological symptoms. It is also important to be observant of the changes taking place in your system. To that end, you might want to keep a journal or notes on any noticeable changes or shifts in your symptoms or health.

Substances to Avoid
Another important thing to remember is that it is wise to avoid any substances that might interfere with your remedy. Certain substances have been found to reverse (&qout;antidote") the effects of homeopathic remedies and medicines.

It is suggested that you avoid the following substances, practices and items to insure the best response from your remedy:
Avoid:
  • Coffee
  • Camphor, or camphorated products including products containing eucalyptus and camphor oils
  • Dental work, teeth cleaning, drilling or anesthetics
  • Electric blankets
  • Mint, or mentholated products
  • Nicotine
  • Recreational drugs
  • Some conventional drugs (Be sure to tell your homeopath what you are taking)
  • X-Rays
  • Stress, which can lower the resonance of a homeopathic remedy
The Follow-Up Visit
Generally, the homeopath will schedule follow-up visits approximately four to six weeks after the first interview and remedy prescription. In simple cases, a patient will feel significantly better after the first treatment. The follow-up visits are used to determine what additional methods or remedies are required. In some cases, it may be required to use more than one remedy sequentially so that balance and full health can be restored.

Traditional homeopathy only applies one remedy at a time. What you will experience when you receive the correct remedy can include the disappearance of specific symptoms, more energy, stronger immune system functions, and a sense of increased well-being. Homeopathic treatments have rapid and far-reaching effects. Even if the changes require time to develop, they usually are long-lasting. (Courtesy: WholeHealthNow)
